Getting Through the Holidays

Since writing my angel books, I have received so many emails from people who have gone through losses of family members.  Almost all of the letters are about how they hope to get through the holidays.  It is as if Christmas in light of a loss has become an occasion to merely tolerate--or sleep through--in hopes that it will magically disappear.

Nevertheless, Christmas is still on the calendar--and etched in the hearts of so many individuals.  After the loss of a loved one, it is often dreaded. So, how does someone go about dealing with it?  I think that creating something in honor of the deceased loved one is key to handling it.  It can be a special ornament, floral arrangement, or even a small tree.  By including the person’s memory tangibly in the upcoming holiday, it can help bridge the gap that has been left by his or her passing.

I think of Christmas as a time to connect with Christ’s spirit and light--a time of brightness and renewal.  So, I would suggest lighting an “Illumination” candle--a plain red or white candle of peace--and say a prayer asking Christ’s spirit to be with you through the holiday.

Through my work with angels, as well as those who are on the Other Side, I have come to understand that many of those who have passed away come to people whom they care about here.  They can come through signs, such as a name on a license plate; a butterfly that lands on someone’s shoulder--and more.  So, this is also a time of year to be on the lookout for such heavenly contact.

I would also recommend buying a special journal to write in just for Christmas.  You can tuck it in a place where you can add to it with each passing year.  Then, this Christmas Eve, whenever you have a few moments to call your own, just write how you are feeling--as if you are talking directly to the person you are missing.  This way, you are including them in your thoughts and conveying those through your writing.  Each year, you can also include a special bookmarker in the journal to have as a keepsake, as well.

These are just some ideas that can help you on your journey through grief.  They are small acts, but can make a big difference in helping you to cope at a time of year that is full of celebration.  But you can celebrate in your own way as you honor the memory of the one you hold dear.

No, the holidays are not something to get through--Each year is unique and this one can be a time of renewal for you and offer you the healing that you need.  Christ’s spirit shines through every tree, gift, and bow when your intention is to spread joy to others.  So, let that be your focus as the holidays approach.  While you are remembering the one you miss so much, remember that it is also a time for you to bring happiness to others who need you in their lives.  In addition to holding on to memories of the one who is gone, let your celebration of the holidays be your gift to those who are here.

Christmas is a perfect time to make a journal in memory of a loved one whom you have lost...As a gift to you from me I wanted to share with these special bookmarkers I made to add to your journal. You can print them out on cardstock.
